Three cost components, often quoted separately and confusingly.
Certification body fees. Paid annually to whoever audits and issues your certificate — BSI, NQA, Alcumus ISOQAR and others. Driven by company size and complexity of scope. Typically £1,500–£4,000+ per year for SMEs, covering the initial Stage 1 and Stage 2 audit plus annual surveillance visits.
Consultancy support. Optional but common for first-time certification, since building a compliant management system from scratch without guidance usually takes far longer and risks audit failure. Ask any consultant for a fixed-fee quote rather than open-ended day rates so you know the ceiling upfront.
Internal time cost. Often overlooked, frequently the largest true cost. Staff time spent on documentation, internal audits, and evidence gathering is real cost even though no invoice arrives for it.
The cheapest path isn't always the lowest total cost. A poorly scoped or rushed implementation that fails Stage 2 or limps through with major nonconformities costs more in re-audit fees, lost time, and reputational risk than doing it properly once.
